Crochet Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Perhaps the palatal form of Crockett, which see. Robert Crochet of the county of Strivelyn rendered homage, 1296 (Bain II, p. 205). John Crochat held part of Grange of Balgreschach, 1470, and John Curchet was tenant in Grange of Kynecrech, 1472 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 155,222).
Today the French surname Crochet occurs in most parishes of southern Louisiana, but over a third of the state's households of that name are concentrated in Assumption, Terrebonne, and Iberia parishes where the families first settled. Like Cheramie, Crochet is not an Acadian name.
Although the Crochet family first to arrive in Louisiana came with the great migration of Acadian exiles from France in 1785, the name of that family derived from the marriage (1758) of Yves Crochet, a native of Megrit in Brittany, to Pélagie Benoist, a daughter of an Acadian refugee.* Widowed in 1773, Pélagie with three sons (Jean, Yyes, Jr., and Julien) and two daughters (Françoise and Marguerite) set sail from St. Malo, France, for Louisiana, with other Acadian refugees, arriving in New Orleans in November, 1785.
The family settled along Bayou Lafourche, where in 1788 Pélagie was living with sons Yves, Jr., and Julien, as was son Jean, by then married to Marie Boudreaux.
Later both Yves, Jr. (m.
ca. 1791 Anne Dugat), and Julien (m. 1798 Marguerite Belanger) established their own households along the Lafourche.
In 1791 Jean Crochet and his family was still on the Lafourche but further data on him seem to be missing;5 most of Yves, Jr.'s, descendants apparently remained along the Lafourche and adjacent bayous in Assumption Parish;6 but by the early 1820s Julien had moved his family into Terrebonne Parish, settling along the bayou below Houma.
In that area his four sons and eleven grandsons firmly implanted the Crochet name, several of the grandsons having settled as small farmers along the lower Bayou Terrebonne in the vicinity of Montegut before the outbreak of the Civil War.
Most of the seventy Crochet families now living in Houma and vicinity probably descend from Julien and his progeny.
Church and census records suggest that Crochet families did not enter the Attakapas until the 1850s. Available information on those families is so incomplete that as yet it has not been possible to connect them with the Crochets who settled earlier along the Lafourche. Some of the Crochet family heads in the Attakapas came directly from France in antebellum days, e.g., the brothers Michel (m. 1856 Augustine Addian) and Jacques (m.
1858 Euphrosine Breaux), both from Toulouse, who settled in the Carencro area north of Lafayette. Still later in 1870 François Crochet of Paris (m. Louise Argelles) came to the Rayne area in present Acadia Parish where his only son, Auguste (m. 1890 Lucille Guillard) continued the Crochet name. Probably the largest of the Crochet families along the Teche was that of Arsène (m.
Balshida Landry), of unknown provenience, whose five sons (?) established large households in the Fausse Pointe area around Loreauville, Iberia Parish.
Still today that area contains a concentration of fifty-five Crochet families.
Around 1890 several Crochets, again of unknown roots began to settle in the western part of old Calcasieu Parish, especially on Bayous Nezpique and Grand Marais all of them probably engaged in rice farming.
The present cluster of Crochet households in the vicinity of Jennings, Hathaway, and Panchoville (Jeff Davis Parish) may descend from those families. Subsequent migrations took many Crochets into the Lake Charles area and southeastern Texas, likely during World War II. Probably prior to that time jobs in industry had attracted many others into Baton Rouge and New Orleans
