Huwe Croket of Kameslank (Cambuslang) and William Croketa of Kylbride, Lanarkshire, rendered homage, 1296. The seal of William bears an eight-rayed figure and S' Will' Crokitta (Bain, II, p. 185,204, 557). Andrew Crokat was one of the chaplains of Sir James Douglas of Dalkeith and Morton in 1384 and in 1390 one of his executors (RHM.). Walter Crokat was tenant of Brwnty, 1457, and Thomas Crokkat tenant of Girnal Mill of Kincreach, 1483 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 137,236). Alexander Croket was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1521 (NSCM., I, p. 47), Patrick Crockett witness in Glasgow, 1530 (LCD., p. 92), and Andrew Crokat held land of the Abbey of Cupar before 1555 (Cupar-Angus, II, p. 120). John Crokat of Erneameny, parish of Crossmichael, was charged with intercommuning with the earl of Morton, 1585. Johnne Crokatis in Rinabir, Dumbarton, 1609 (RPC., VIII, p. 310), Robert Croket in Aber was a Macgregor resetter, 1614 (ibid., X, p. 226), and John Crokkit in Achinkyle was charged with molesting the minister at Inchcallioch and stealing his timber, 1634 (ibid., 2. ser. V, p. 212). Colene Crokat was shipmaster in Dundee, 1614, and there was a wealthy family of this name in Edinburgh in seventeenth century. Bardsley says "the origin is undoubtedly local" but cannot discover the spot. (2) The Galloway family name Crockett is said to be derived from MacRiocaird, son of Rickard (Richard).
