The Crawfords take their name from the Lanarkshire village 50 miles south of Glasgow and 53 miles north of Carlisle. The name refers to a ford (river crossing) near a colony of crows. The name can also derive from the nearby village of Crawfordjohn, also in Lanarkshire. Crawford Castle residence of William Wallace, which lies a mile to the north.
