This surname is early found in Orkney, and now appears to be confined solely to South Ronaldsay. It is curiously enough not found in Scotland proper. Manys Cromate, senior, and his son, Manys Cromade, were jurors on an assize of lawting in 1509, and John Cromate and Magnus Cromate were two of those respited for the slaughter of the earl of Caithness in 1539 (RSS., II, 3151). This Orkney form of the surname comes near to the old forms of the place name which shows no second r (1292 Crumbathi). William de Crumbacy, valet to John, earl of Caithness was granted a safe conduct returning to his lord in 1291 (Bain, II, 535). John Crummartie was arbitrator in a land dispute in Orkney, 1567 (OSR., I, p. 162).
