A surname found mainly in Aberdeenshire, derived from the place Crombie in the parish of Auchtcrless. The Gaelic b is silent, and the local pronunciation as well as most old deeds omit it, e.g. Cromee, Cromy, Cromie, Crommay, and Crumy (PSAS., LXV, p. 430). Robert Crumby, chaplain, witness in Brechin, 1450 and 1464 (REB., I, 138; 11,103). Patrick of Cromby, chaplain of Scotland, had a safe conduct into England, 1423, William of Crumby the same in the following, year, and Andrew Cromby, Scottish merchant the same in 1475 (Bain, IV, 928,970, 1433). David Crommy was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1516 (NSCM., I, p. 46), Thomas Crommy, witness in Aberdeen, 1567 (Aboyne, p. 107), James Crommy or Crommie, witness in Spynie, 1560—71—84 (REM., p. 409,410, 422), and Thomas Cromby was writer in Edinburgh, 1618 (SCM., IV, p. 258).
