They were well established in the parish of Rochdale daring the 16th century (F.), and still occur there. Peter Crompton was one of the constables of Manchester in 1767, and Nathan Crompton filled the office of boroughreeve of that town in 1791 (B.). Samuel Crompton, a weaver of Hall - in - the - Wood near Bolton, made his family and his fortune by his invention of the mule spinning - frame in 1775 (B.). The Derbyshire Cromptons, a distinguished family of last century, were descended from Abraham Crompton of Brightmet, Lancashire, in the reign of James I. (Glover's "Derbyshire").
