User-submitted Reference

This name originates from Hindustan - the northern/northwestern Indian subcontinent, sometimes also used for the entire subcontinent. The following discussion on the origins of the surname 'Crorie' is based on the book, The History of Hindostan by Alexander Dow, Esq., Lieutenant in the Company's Service.

Published in 1803 and translated from the Persian the book discusses transactions in the Mogul Empire (1526-1857). It uggest the title, crorie, came to use during this period. In its glossary the book states:

"Crorie: The collector of the revenues of a district."

Crorie was a position in the administration and financial divsions of a district. Tenants in said districts were accountable to him for the usual rents and established rights of the Dewanny (a powerful government official, minister or ruler) from term to term, and from year to year.

The position of crorie held authority and demanded that tenants paid revenues, "without scruple or refusal, nor in any manner oppose his authority in the just execution of his duty in all that respects the royal revenues; nor conceal any thing general or particular from him, that properly ought to come under his cognizance."

The position also had certain responsibilities and requirement:

1) The above-mentioned is ordered to study economy in his department

2) To apply with diligence to his duty

3) Must not permit the minutest transaction in that district to pass unobserved

4) To behave with justice and humanity to the Riôts(tenants), that they may have no cause of complaint, but be encouraged to apply themselves diligently to their various occupations

5) That the annual collections may increase yearly, as well as the happiness of the inhabitants

6) He is from time to time to lodge his collections in the provincial treasury

Summary: Bearers of the Crorie surname are perhaps descendants of those who held the position of Crorie in the Mughal/Mogol Empire.

It is important to note that the word, crorie, is an anglicised version of a Persian or Sanskrit name. The anglicised crorie derives from the word, crore, which denotes ten million (10,000,000 or 107 in scientific notation). Should the name Crorie be written in its original language it is most likely derived from koror (Persian) and koti (Sanskrit)

Currently (21st century) large amounts of money in India and Nepal are often written in terms of croresas. The usage of the term crorie to describe the position of a revenue collector is most probably due to the crores of money handled.
