A surname common in Wigtownshire and Dumfriesshire, and of local or territorial origin from one or other of the places named Crosbie or Corsbie in the shires of Ayr, Kirkcudbright, and Berwick. Iuone de Crosseby witnessed charter by Robert de Bruys to Arbroath Abbey between 1178—1180 (RAA., I, p. 38), and in 1189, as Ivo de Crossebi, along with Richard de Crossebi, he witnessed an agreement regarding lands in Annandale (Bain, I, 197). Iuone de Crossebj and Richard de Crossebj witnessed gift of the church of Moffet, etc., to Church of Glasgow, c. 1187 (REG., p. 64). Robert de Crossebi witnessed resignation of land of Weremundebi and Anant, c. 1194—1214 (Bain, I, 606), and a charter of lands in the fee of Pennersaughs within the same period (Annandale, I, p. 3). Adam de Crosseby quitclaimed to Sir Robert de Brus lands and holdings in Cumbertres in exchange for a tenement in Gretenhou (Gretna) between 1215—45 (Bain, I, 1685), Richard de Crossebi witnessed a charter of lands of Egilfechan c. 1249 (Annandale, I, p. 7). Raginald de Crosseby witnessed a charter c. 1280 (LSC., p. 67), and in 1296 rendered homage (Bain). John de Crosseby was appointed to the vacant church of S. Mary in the Forest in Selkirk, 1298 (Bain, II, 1008). Walterus de Crosby was charter witness at Lamberton in 1332 (BNCH., XVI, p. 327), Robert de Crosby assizer at Lochmaben, 1347 (Bain, III, 1499), Thomas de Crosby is recorded in Glasgow, 1440 (REG., 344), and Isabel Corsbie in Dysart, 1593 (Dysart, p. 42). Sir James Corsby, cleric, was witness at Inchestuir, 1546 (Rollok, 5). Corsbe 1517. The earlier Crosbies were followers or vassals of the Bruces.
