This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Cronkshaw,' the twisting or winding shaw, i.e. wood. Cronkshaw seems to have lain in the parish of Rochdale or Bury, Lancashire Cronshaw and Cranshaw are variants of the surname, and Crankshaw is the more correct modern representative. This form is well represented across the Atlantic.
