This surname is derived from a nickname. 'the crump,' i.e. the crooked. 'Crumpt, or crookt: Nomenclator.' (Halliwell). The surname is well known in the United States. Bridget Crompe emigrated to Virginia in 1635, and Thomas Crompe was already settled there in 1634 (v. Hotten's Lists of Emigrants, pp. 117, 237).
