This surname is derived from a nickname. 'the crump,' i.e. the crooked. 'Crumpt, or crookt: Nomenclator.' (Halliwell). The surname is well known in the United States. Bridget Crompe emigrated to Virginia in 1635, and Thomas Crompe was already settled there in 1634 (v. Hotten's Lists of Emigrants, pp. 117, 237).

Two hundred years since, a Bristol alderman, who was also member of Parliament for that city, bore the name of Crump (Bar.). The Crumps were mayors of Gloucester during the first half of last century (R.), and about the same time the name was represented in Chedworth and Oldbury (Bigl.). Crump is still a Bristol and a Gloucester name.
Thomas Crump was mayor of Hereford in 1610 (P.), and the name is still in the city. The Crumps are also established in Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, and Monmouthshire, and further reference to them will be found under one or more of those counties.
