Culpeper Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This family, who were eminent in Kent and Sussex from the XIII. to the XVIII. century, were so numerous and influential that Camden notes, in his Remaines, the remarkable fact, that, "at one time there were twelve Knights and Baronets alive of this house together." The Barons Colepeper, extinct in 1752, were a branch. Strange as it may appear, I believe that in the counties above mentioned the name is entirely extinct, and in other parts of England it is very rarely met with. The etymology of the word puzzles me. If it might be taken literally, (Cull-pepper), it was an excellent name for the celebrated herbalist, Nic. Culpeper, who was of this family.
