From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

CULWEN: From Colvend near the mouth of the river Urr, Kirkcudbrightshire, the old spelling of which was Culewen. Gilbert de Culewen witnessed Eustace de Balliol's charter of the church of Hur (Urr) to the Abbey of Holyrood, 1262 (LSC., 81). Adam de Culwenne who witnessed a grant by Thomas, son of Andrew de Kyrconeuel to Holmcultran c, 1280—90 (Holm Cultram, p. 48), may be the Adam de Colwenne who was one of an inquest at Berwick in 1296 (Bain, II, 824). Sir Thomas filius Gilbert de Culwenne attested the bounds of the grange of Kircwynni and the land of Culwen in Kirkgunzeon, 1289, and Adam de Culwenne is another witness (Holm Cultram, p. 88). William de Colven of Dumfriesshire rendered homage in the same year, and Patrick de Collewen was in the king of England's service, 1298 (Bain, II, 810,989).
