CUMSTOUN: Wauter de Cummstun of Dumfriesshire who swore fealty to England in 1296 is probably the Walter de Comestone, juror on an inquisition at Dumfries in 1304 (Bain, II, p. 185. 412). Adam de Combistoun was custumar of Kirkcudbrith in 1331 (ER., I, p. 374). The name most probably derived from Cumstoun, Tongland, Kirkcudbrightshire. There is also a Cumstone near Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire.
