From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
(1) A variant of Corrie, which see. Although there is a place named Currie in Midlothian there is no evidence of its having given origin to a surname. Philip de Curry granted the lands of Dalhengun and Bargower in Kyle to the Abbey of Melrose, 1179 (Seals, 299). About 1210 Peter de Curri witnessed a charter by Malcolm Loccard (RMP., p. 71), and John Curry of Scotland is mentioned in an Annandale charter, 1238 (Bain, I, 1427). Robert de Curri witnessed a Melrose charter of 1243—44 (Melros, 191), and Adam de Curry was witness to a charter by Laurence Avenel between 1260—68 (REG., 221). Sir Walter de Curry was appointed keeper of the castles of Wygget III, Kirkcudbright, and Dumfries by Edward I in 1291 (Rain, II, 572). Henry de Curry appears as charter witness c 1330 (RHM., I, 39), and about the same time he attested a charter by Radulph, lord of Cranystoun to the Hospital of Soltre (Soltre, p. 43). He may be the Henry who appears as canon of Glasgow in 1339 (Pap. Lett., II, p. 545) and in 1362 (RMP., p. 144,239). Walter de Curry took a prominent part in the capture of Edinburgh Castle from the English and was rewarded for the same, 1342 (ER., I, p. clvi, 507). Robertus de Curry was a 'native man' of the bishop of Moray, 1364 (REM., p. 161). Henry Cinry was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1400 (NSCM., I, p. I), Edward Curre was tenant in barony of Stobo, 1511 (Rental), and John Curre held a tenement in Glasgow, 1506 (REG., 485). Sir Hugh Currye was Commendator of Strathfillan, 1549 (Statutes Scot. Church, ed. Patrick, p. 88), and Robert Curray was merchant burgess of Edinburgh, 1693 (Inquis., 7326). Cwrry 1528. (2) A modification of Macvurich, which see. The minister at Row, Dumbartonshire, 1709—19, was known as Rev. Archibald Currie or M'Currie.
