From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From the place of this name in the parish of Leochel, Aberdeenshire. John Cusne witnessed sasine of third part of Drumfiogne, 1508 (Bamff, p. 44), and in 1534 another John Cowsny witnessed sasine by Master Alexander Ramsay (ibid., p. 64). A payment was made to Donald Cousny, an invalid, in 1509 (Rent. Dunk., p. 108). Gavin Cusny was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1526 (NSCM,, I, p. 50) William Cusne was prebendar of the Collegiate church of Methven in 1549 (Metfwen, p. 49), Thomas Quishney was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1560 (NSCM., I, p. 67), and James Cusnye or Cuschny was reader of Aboyne in 1567 (AEI., p. 118; RMR.). John Cushnie was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1606 (NSCM., I, p. 101), payment was made to Patrick Cuschnye in the same burgh in 1629, and four years later John Cuschnie in Culsalmond is mentioned (SCM., V, p. 103; ibid., III, p. 89), Thomas Cushney, "glasior in Aberdein," in record in 1658 (Inquis., 4332). John Cushnie, shipmaster, died in Aberdeen in 1801, the Rev. Alexander Cushny, minister at Oyne died in 1839, and his son, Rev. Alexander Cushny, minister of Rayne, died Father of the Church of Scotland in July 1874 (Fasti, VI).
