Custy Surname Definition:

Woulfe evidently treated the name Custy as obsolete, as he does not give this as one of the anglicized variants of the Gaelic Irish Mac Oiste (or Mac Coiste), though he does give MacCosty as a form no longer in use. Custy, however, appears in the Clare freeholders, 1821, and is still extant in west Clare to my own knowledge.

Custy Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

According to tradition Mac Oiste, normally anglicized Hosty (sometimes Hasty), originated as a surname with Roger (Hodge) Merrick, a Mayo Welshman who was killed in 1276. It was in Co. Galway in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries: it occurs as MacCusty in the Compossicion Book of Conought (1585); eight times as MacCosty(e) and MacCosto in the Galway Book of Survey & Distribution (barony of Dunmore) and many times in the Elizabethan Fiants relating to counties Galway and Mayo as MacHostie, MacHoste, MacCoiste, MacQuist etc., and is still found in its modern form in fair numbers in those counties.

Hasty is mentioned in the Registrar-General's report on synonyms as becoming Hastings both in Co. Armagh and Co. Derry. The rare name McGusty is also presumably an anglicized form of Mac Oiste.
