A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

An Old English personal name meaning "bright champion. The popularity of this surname in the Lothians and in the north of England is due to the great saint of Lindisfarne after whom the town of Kirkcudbright was named. A church dedicated to S. Cuthbert in Dryfesdale was granted to Jocelin, bishop of Glasgow in 1174. The common pronunciation of the saint's name over the whole north of England is invariably Cudbert, from which comes the diminutives 'Cuddie' and 'Cuddy' Paton Cudbert and Thom Cudbert were tenants in the Grange of Kerso in 1466 (Curar-Angus, I, p. 154). Maister Cuthberd Weishe witnessed the laird of Pitfouris band in 1543 (SCM., II, p. 271), a marriage contract between George Cudbert or Cudoerth and Jonet Balye is recorded in 1560 (CMN., 77), and James Cuthbert was a charter witness in Brechin in 1566 (REB., II, 212). A family of this name settled in Inverness in the beginning of the fifteenth century and for long after took a prominent part in the civic affairs of the town. Thomas Cuthbert, burgess of Inverness, entered into an obligation to William, earl of Errol in 1455 (SCM., II, p. 211), and John Cutbert was alderman of the town in 1510. Andrew Cutbert held a yard and land in Perth, 1545 (Rollok, 4). In 1686 the Scottish Parliament granted warrant to Charles Colbert de Croissy (1625—96), brother of the marquis of Seignelay, for a bore-brieve as a descendant of the Cuthberts of Castlehill, and as a connection of all the more ancient families of Scotland (APS., VIII, p. 611—613; SCM., V, pref. p. 30. In APS. the pedigree for several generations is given). The Cuthberts of Castlehill are styled in Gaelic Mac Sheorals (TGSI., XXI, p. 10). John Cudbert charged with 'casual murder' in Brechin, 1650 (PBK., p. 348). As forename: Cubbe Anderson, 1557 (M'Dowell, Lincluden, p. 111). Cuttie or Cuthbert Armorer was agent of the earl of Bothwell, 1589 (Calendar of Scots papers, X, p. 140,652). Cutber 1550, Cuthberd 1587.
