A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

From the occupation of knife-maker (ME. cutyler, coteler, OF. cotelier). Matthew de Coteleir of Berwick rendered homage in 1296 (RR.). A Galloway surname. The Cutlers of Orroland, parish of Rerwick, are said to have obtained the lands from the monks of Dundrennan Abbey in 1437. The local tradition is that the first of the Cutlers who came to the parish was employed in sharpening the tools of the masons engaged in the erection of the abbey and thereby acquired their name (M'Kerlie, V, p. 104). This is most improbable. There is no mention of the family until 1606 when John Cuidar was served heir to his father in Oroland (Retours, Kirkcudbright, 68). The surname occurs in Aberdeen in 1460 (CRA., p. 405). Hugh Cutler was repledged to liberty of burgh of Irvine, 1472 (Irvine, I, p. 28), and Thomas Cutlar possessed a tenement in Brechin, 1493 (REB., II, 138). Payments were made to Robert Cultellare or Cultelar 'for suordis for turnaying,' in 1503 (Trials, I, p. 119). Henry Cuthleyr possessed a land in Glasgow c. 1540 (LCD., p. 34), John Cuttler was retoured heir of John Cutler, portioner of Auchtermuchtie, his father, 1698 (Retours, Fife, 1412), and Mrs. Deborah Cutler of Craigdarroch is recorded in 1796 (Dumfries). Cuidar 1648, Cuthlar 1466, Cutlair 1511, Cudare 1508.
