(English) The son, or family, of Cutha (famous); a corrupt form of the French Cotin or Cottin which are the diminutives of the terminal syllable of Jacquot or Nicot.
(Saxon.) Cuth, well known, famous; and ing, equivalent to the Latin ens, expressing the existence of the quality or action of the word to which it is affixed; or Cuthing, the son of Cuth. Ing, inge, or inger, in most of the Teutonic languages, denotes offspring, a descendant.
The Cuttings are at present at home in Ipswich and its neighbourhood. Edward Cuttinge held land in Haughley, Stowmarket, in the reign of Edward IV. (H.).
