Dahill Surname Definition:

Woulfe says that according to MacFirbis Ó Dathail was sept of the Silmurray, Co. Roscommon, but is now peculiar to Co. Tipperary. The latter part of this statement is incorrect as it belongs as much to Co. Cork as to Co. Tipperary. If we may identify O'Deal with O'Dahill it appears in Co.

Dahill Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Cork records very early. Walter O'Daal, charged with many thefts, was delivered to Philip de Rupe as his hibernicus at Cork gaol delivery in 1295.In the sixteenth century we meet John Roe MacDonagh O'Dahill of Bruree, Co. Limerick, in 1579 and Knogher O'Deaghill, who was born in 1529, appears as a deponent before the commission appointed to determine the bounds of the Earl of Ormond's ancient estates in 1590 and the evidence of others of the name is cited in this Co. Kilkenny case. An analysis of several years of birth registrations shows that in modern times Dahills are found in all Munster counties except Kerry and Clare but seldom in other-parts of the country. Daile and Deale may occasionally have been used as anglicized forms of O'Dathail but normally these are English names both derived from the word dale i.e. valley. MacDeale and MacDeele, and in one case O'Deele as well as Deale and Dale occur frequently in the Armagh hearth money rolls of 1664-5: 1 do not know the origin of this name in Ulster.
