From Dalgety in the parish of the same name in Fife, or from the lands of Dalgety or Delgaty in Aberdeenshire, formerly belonging to a family of that name. There appears also to have been lands of the name in the parish of Brechin, and there is record of a grant in 1594 to Hercules Delgaty of the escheat of the goods of Robert Low in Brechin (REB., II, 368). David Delegate was retoured heir to Margaret Butchert, 1649 (Inquis., 3537). The name has been made famous by Scott's Dugald Dalgetty in A Legend of Montrose. Old spellings are Dalgitie (1672), Daigati.
