From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From the old barony of the same name in Midlothian. Sir Alexander de Dalmhoy, miles, c. 1295, granted permission to the monks of Newhattle to pass freely through his lands of Dalmhoy (Neubotle, p. 165). He and his son, also named Alexander, about the same time appear as witnesses to a charter in favor of that monastery (ibid., p. 161), and as Alisaundre de Dalmahoy of Edinburghshire the father rendered homage in 1296. His seal carries three mullets on a chief, and S' Alexandri de Dalmthoi (Bain, II, p. 185,200). Henry de Dalmahoy of Linlithgowshire also rendered homage in 1296 (ibid., p. 205), and Roger Dalmahoy was one of the garrison of Edinburgh Castle in 1339—40 (ibid., III, p. 241). Andrew Dalmahoy was "serjand mare of Edinburgh" in 1522 (ALHT., V, p. 204), Matthew Dalmahoy was a witness in Linlithgow, 1534 (Johnsoun), Catharina Dalmahoy recorded in Edinburgh, 1627 (Retours, Peebles, 74), and William Dalmahoy was "quartermaster of his Maties troup of gauird" in 1684 (BOEC., IX., p. 152).
