A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

The first authentic notice of Dalrymples is in the charter of their lands to John Kenedy of Dunure in 1371. The charter embraces three generations, of which Adam de Dalrympil is the first of the name (RMS., I, 381). James of Dalrymple witnessed a charter by Robert, earl of Fife, c. 1390 (Athole, p. 706), and John de Dalrympil was provost of Edinburgh in 1392 (Egidii, p. 28). Gilbert of Dalrympille, a Scots prisoner of war, was released from the Tower of London in 1413 (Bain, IV, 839). John of Dalrymple (Dalrympille, or Dauripill) received safe conducts to travel through England between 1447 and 1459 (ibid., 1207, 1228, 1299), and David Dalrumple, who had a similar safe conduct in 1463 (ibid., 1338) may be the David de Dalrumpyll or Dalrumpil recorded in Edinburgh in 1467 (Neubotle, 299). Fergus Dalrumpill, a follower of the earl of Cassilis, was respited for murder in 1526 (RSS., I, 3386). In the muster rolls of the Scots Guards in France the surname appears as de Romple. About the end of the thirteenth century the lands of Dalrumpill or Dalrumpyl in Ayrshire belonged to the ancestors of the Earl of Stair, who assumed their surname from them. Gaelic etymologists derive the name of the place from Dal-chrom-puil. "the meadow of, or by, the crooked pool." This renowned family, which has probably produced more eminent men than any other in Scotland, was not ennobled until the XVII. century, by the title of Viscount (afterwards Earl) of Stair.

Local: from the barony of Dalrymple in Ayrshire. The family are descended from Adam de Daliymple, temp. Alexander III.

The Origin and Signification of Scottish Surnames (1862) by Clifford Stanley Sims (1839-1896)

Local. Taken from the lands and barony of Dalrymple, in Ayrshire, Scotland. The name is said to be a corruption of the Gaelic Dale—roi—milleadh, which signifies "the valley of the slaughter of kings,"and the place was so called from a battle fought there before the Christian era, in which two kings, Fergus and Coilus, were slain. According to others, it signifies "the valley of the crooked pool." I think the name signifies "the valley on the margin of the pool,"from the Welsh Dol, a valley; rhim, the edge or border, and pwll, a pool. It is very nearly the same in Gaelic; Bail, a vale, troimh, by, along the whole extent, and poll, a small lake.

An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names (1857) by William Arthur

(Scotch), Dail a 'crom poll, Dale of the crooked pool. Dalrymple, co. Ayr, lies in a bend or turn of the river Doon.

Dalzell, White meadow. The old heralds, to make good their story of the origin of this family, interpret this, “I dare;”but it is undoubtedly a local name. In early charters, it is written Dallyell.
