(English) belonging to Dalston = DÆgel’s Estate [Old English tún, estate, farm, &c. The Anglo-Saxon pers. name Dægel is from Old English dæg = day, with the diminutive or formerly suff. -el: cp. Dagg. The same pers. name occurs in the place-name Daylesford (Anglo-Saxon charter-form, Dæglesford] There is, however, some reason for believing that the second element of the Cumberland Dalston should be -stone— Old English stán, a stone, rock, or stone castle.
Ranulph de Meschines, earl of Chester, temp. Will. Conq., gave Dalston in Cumberland to Robert, second brother of Hubert de Vaux, who derived his name from that manor, and founded the family.
Or De Vaux, named from Dalston, Cumberland. Ranulph Meschin, t. William the Conqueror, granted the barony of Dalston, Cumberland, to Robert, brother of Hubert and Ranulph de Vaux (Nicholson and Burns, Cumberland, 316). All his descendants bore the name of Dalston, and for arms three daws or daws’ heads. De Vaux came from Normandy. See Vaux.
