The name was derived from their residence on a high bank or shore. Norman-the Frenchhaulte-rive, and hence the latinization De Alta Ripa, often modified to Dealtry and Dawtrey, while Hawtrey and Haultrey are closer adhesions to the primitive form' (Patronymica Britannica). He further adds that Hauterive is in the arrondissement of Alencon in Normandy.
