Our family has resided in Central Macedonia, Greece, for at least six generations. In Greek the name is a close homonym of the prune fruit (damaskino), but its most likely provenance with Damascus in modern-day Syria, which was an important trade and production center on the silk road. Our ancestors were most likely part of a Christian Syrian diaspora, representing and promoting trade interests in their region from the late Byzantine (12th c. AD) to the end of the Ottoman era. During the past two centuries our family seen to have been free farmers, with occasional offshoots in local public service, national public service and local government. We have at times been in the peasant class, lower-middle class to middle class.
