This surname originated from the Chinese surname Chen.
However, when these people migrated out of China, to their respective countries, the immigration officers at those countries each had their own dialect. Therefore when Cantonese people said it, it became Chan, and when Teochew or Hokkien (Singapore) people said it, it became Chan. And respectively for all the other variations.
