The English surname Dane (which is not derived from Denmark but from an old English word meaning a valley) has inevitably been confused with Dean (see More Irish Families p. 82). In Ireland, however, Dane is primarily the name of a Connacht septÓ Déaghain. In the “census” of 1659 it appears as one of the principal Irish names in Co. Roscommon; and two centuries later we find it largely concentrated around Belmullet in the adjoining county of Mayo.

(English) One who came from Denmark (forest of the Danes); dweller near the Dane River, in Cheshire.
occurs singly in Domesd., in the counties of Notts and Lincoln, as a personal name, like Norman, Frank, &c.; and Danus as a distinctive epithet or surname is added to the personal names Osmund, Simond, Strang, and Turchil to indicate their Danish birth or extraction. But Dane is also a topographical expression, the meaning of which is not clear. In the H.R. we find both Atte Dane, and De la Dane.
From the Old Norse, Danir; from the Swedish, Dann; from the Danish, Dehn, Dein; from the German, Denia, Deny; in the Domesday Book, Dane, Dinni, Dene, Dena; a personal name.
