The Dangwal's are one of the top-four prominent high caste brahmins (Chauthogi) Brahmin lineages in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand others being (Dobhal, Uniyal and Bahuguna);carrying a long tradition of scholarship, priesthood, and service in both religious and royal domains.They are part of Gangari brahmin sub-group of brahmins in the garhwal region others being (Sarola brahmins and khas brahmins) .Dangwal's generally have Kaundinya gotra lineages, Some families might have Bharadwaj gotra or Vishwamitra Gotra lineages.But Kaundinya gotra is the dominant one.

1. Etymology & Lineage

The surname Dangwal is believed to have originated from 'Dang,' meaning ridge or mountain slope in Garhwali, indicating their early settlement in hilly terrain.The surname 'Dangwal' is associated with the Dang village in Garhwal region of Uttarakhand.Villages named 'Dang' can be found in the Pauri Garhwal as well as Tehri Garhwal region of the Garhwal area.

As Brahmins, they trace their roots to ancient Vedic traditions, preserving rituals, scriptures, and astrology.The Dangwal caste has a Dravidian origin among the Gangari Brahmins.They are believed to have settled in Dang village from Santoli, Karnataka in 982 Samvat.

Their ancestral figure was Dharanidhar.

2. Religious Role

Historically, many Dangwals were temple priests and custodians of shrines in Garhwal.

They often performed major rituals, including yajnas, sanskaras (life-cycle rites), and royal ceremonies.They also held positions of the Royal astrologers as well as the Raj-gurus in the Garhwal kingdom.

3. Scholarly Contributions

Known for deep knowledge in Sanskrit, philosophy, and astrology, Dangwals were often invited to royal courts and respected as advisors.

Some became writers, teachers, and keepers of oral traditions in Garhwali culture.

4. Royal Association

In the Garhwal Kingdom, Dangwal Brahmins, along with the other Chauthogi families, served as rajgurus (royal priests),Strategic advisors, diplomats and counselors.They were the royal courtiers of the Garhwal Kingdom and held several administrative positions and roles in the Garhwal kingdom.

Their guidance was considered auspicious in matters of governance, war, and diplomacy.

5. Present Times

Today, Dangwals are found across Uttarakhand majorly in the Tehri garhwal as well as Pauri Garhwal region of the Garhwal area and in other parts of India due to migration.

Many continue in priestly and scholarly roles, while others have excelled in modern fields like education, administration, defense, and sciences.

The Dangwal lineage symbolizes wisdom, tradition, and cultural guardianship within the Garhwali Brahmin community.

डंगवाल, उत्तराखंड के गढ़वाल क्षेत्र में चार प्रमुख उच्च वर्गीय ब्राह्मण वंशों (चौथोगी ब्राह्मण) में से एक हैं। अन्य तीन वंश हैं – (डोभाल, उनियाल और बहुगुणा)। ये विद्या, पुरोहिताई तथा धार्मिक एवं राजकीय सेवा की दीर्घ परंपरा को अपने साथ लेकर चलते हैं।

ये गढ़वाल क्षेत्र के गंगाड़ी ब्राह्मण उपसमूह का हिस्सा हैं, अन्य उपसमूह हैं – सरोला ब्राह्मण और खस ब्राह्मण। डंगवाल प्रायः कौंडिन्य गोत्र के माने जाते हैं, किंतु कुछ परिवार भारद्वाज गोत्र या विश्वामित्र (कौशिक) गोत्र से भी संबंध रखते हैं। फिर भी कौंडिन्य गोत्र सर्वाधिक प्रचलित है।

1. व्युत्पत्ति एवं वंशावली

'डंगवाल' उपनाम की उत्पत्ति गढ़वाली शब्द 'डांग' से मानी जाती है, जिसका अर्थ है पर्वतीय ढलान या कगार। यह उनके आरंभिक निवास को पहाड़ी क्षेत्रों में दर्शाता है।यह उपनाम गढ़वाल क्षेत्र के 'डांग' नामक गाँव से भी जुड़ा हुआ है। 'डांग' नामक गाँव पौड़ी गढ़वाल तथा टिहरी गढ़वाल दोनों ही जिलों में पाए जाते हैं।

ब्राह्मण होने के नाते, वे अपने वंश की जड़ें वैदिक परंपरा से जोड़ते हैं और संस्कार, ज्योतिष तथा शास्त्रों की परंपरा को आगे बढ़ाते आए हैं।

डंगवाल जाति का मूल गंगाड़ी ब्राह्मणों में द्रविड़ीय उद्गम से माना जाता है। माना जाता है कि वे संवत ९८२ (लगभग ९२५ ई.) में संतोली, कर्नाटक से गढ़वाल के डांग गाँव में आकर बसे।

उनके प्राचीन कुलपुरुष का नाम धरनीधर बताया जाता है।

2. धार्मिक भूमिका

ऐतिहासिक रूप से, डंगवाल अनेक मंदिरों के पुरोहित और अर्चक रहे हैं।उन्होंने यज्ञ, संस्कार (जीवन चक्र से जुड़े अनुष्ठान), तथा राजकीय धार्मिक अनुष्ठानों का संचालन किया।वे गढ़वाल राज्य में राज-ज्योतिषी और राजगुरु की भूमिकाएँ भी निभाते थे।

3. विद्वत योगदान

डंगवाल ब्राह्मण संस्कृत, दर्शन और ज्योतिष के गहन ज्ञान के लिए प्रसिद्ध रहे।उन्हें प्रायः राजदरबारों में आमंत्रित किया जाता और सलाहकार के रूप में सम्मान दिया जाता।कुछ डंगवाल विद्वान लेखक, अध्यापक और गढ़वाली मौखिक परंपराओं के संरक्षक भी बने।

4. राजकीय संबंध

गढ़वाल राज्य के समय, डंगवाल ब्राह्मण अन्य चौथोगी परिवारों के साथ राजगुरु (राजकीय पुरोहित), रणनीतिक सलाहकार, राजनयिक और दरबारी के रूप में कार्यरत थे।उन्होंने गढ़वाल दरबार में अनेक प्रशासनिक पद और भूमिकाएँ निभाईं।राजनीति, युद्ध और कूटनीति जैसे विषयों में उनकी सलाह शुभ और निर्णायक मानी जाती थी।

5. वर्तमान समय

आज डंगवाल मुख्य रूप से टिहरी गढ़वाल और पौड़ी गढ़वाल क्षेत्रों में पाए जाते हैं।प्रवास के कारण वे भारत के अन्य भागों में भी बस गए हैं।

वर्तमान समय में भी अनेक डंगवाल पुरोहिताई और विद्वत्ता से जुड़े कार्य करते हैं, जबकि अन्य ने शिक्षा, प्रशासन, सेना और विज्ञान जैसे आधुनिक क्षेत्रों में उत्कृष्ट योगदान दिया है।
