User-submitted Reference

The Dantas surname second very reliable sources (see, for example "Dicionário Etimológico de Nomes e Sobrenomes" by Professor Rosário Farâni Mansur Guérios, São Paulo, Editora Ave Maria, 1981) is a Portuguese noun used as surname that comes from the combination (in ancient Portuguese) "de+Antas" = "d'Antas"= from+Antas; and "Antas" itself is the toponym (place name) for any location where there was, as it is frequent in northern Portugal, « a dolmen, also known as a cromlech, portal tomb, portal grave or quoit, which are a type of single-chamber celtic megalithic tomb, usually consisting of two or more megaliths supporting a large flat horizontal capstone ("table") » - quotation from Wikipedia. As such this very old Portuguese surmane of celtic origin has nothing to do or any correlation at all with « the South American tapir (Tapirus terrestris), Brazilian tapir (from the Tupi tapi'ira), lowland tapir or (in Portuguese) anta, is one of five species in the tapir family » (quotation from Wikipedia also) which is correctly or rather incorrectly known as a very stupid animal.
