Dantignac Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

Dantignac is a French surname. The spelling 'Dantignac' is anglicized. The man who brought it to America was the Sieur d'Antignac, a Huguenot (French Protestant) who was obliged to leave France when Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes in 1685. He came to Charleston, South Carolina. Most people by this name now live in Georgia. The title 'Sieur' was essentially the equivalent of the English 'Sir.' It was used by French noblemen who had no other title but, unlike the English 'Sir,' it was always tied to a landed estate; hence 'Sieur d'Antignac,' which could be rendered (approximately) as 'the Lord of Antignac.' Antignac is a commune in the Auvergne region of France.
