William Denvers, evidently one of the Conqueror's adherents, occurs in the Norfolk Domesd.; and genealogists assert that a Roland D'Anvers assisted at the Conquest. The name may be derived from the city of Antwerp, continentally written Anvers.

From Anvers, or Antwerp. Richard de A. witnessed a charter of Roger de Mowbray (Mon. ii. 395). Ralph de A. held two fees of the Honour of Wallingford 13th cent. (Testa de Neville). In 1316 Simon D. of Oxford, and William of Bucks, and 1324 Henry of Leicester, are mentioned (Parliamentary Writs). Hence descended the Earls of Danby, Lords Danvers.
