Dardis Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Though not actually an uncommon name — there are 15 Dardis entries in the current Dublin City Directory and some families in several Leinster counties-it has never been numerous. Birth returns indicate that it is one of the few surnames which has held its own numerically since compulsory registration was introduced in 1864, notwithstanding the fact that the population of Ireland was then 50 per cent higher than it is now. There are few names, even of »those which are far more numerous, which occur more often through the centuries in every record dealing with north Leinster since 1250,e.g. the Justiciary Rolls, ecclesiastical registers, Dowdall Deeds, the Fiants, the Chancery Rolls, testamentary records, and so on. Five of the names appear on the roll of Jacobites who were outlawed after the defeat of James II. There are four places called Dardistown — two in Co. Meath, one in Westmeath and one in Co.
Dublin — and another called Dardisrath in Co. Louth, and these testify to the importance of this family and indicate the localities in which they were mainly established, though by the end of the sixteenth century the Meath and Westmeath properties had largely fallen into the hands of the Talbot and Nugent families. The name hardly occurs at all in English records: it is said to be derived from the Ards (in Co. Down) and certainly appears in medieval Irish documents as Dardes and Darditz: Woulfe gives de Ardis as an obsolete form.
The importance of this Hiberno-Norman family is evidenced by the fact that there are four places called Dardistown and one Dardisrath in north Leinster.
The name is said to be derived from the Ards, Co.
