John Darge possessed a tenement in Northberwyk, 1477 (CMN., 36), and Stephen Darg witnessed a notarial transumpt of a letter of James III in 1537 to the burgesses of Haddington (James II, 21). Andrew Darg admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1572 (NSCM., I, p. 76), is probably Andrew Dayrg who was elected deacon in 1591 (SCM., II, p. 67). Robert Darge was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1612 (NSCM., I, p. 10), Janet Darg appears in Dundee, 1613 (Brechin), Duncan Dairge is in record in Balchirnoch, 1620. Mr. Walter Darge was deprived of the liberty of preaching within the presbytery of Fordyce, 1666 (AIford, I, p. 86), James Darg, messenger in Edinburgh, 1687 (Edin. App.), and Robert Darg, boatman in the Bass, 1689 (RPC., 3. ser. XIII, p. 447). Thomas Dark, 'tyd waiter,' in Aberdeen before 1721 (NSCM I, p. 107), Alexander Darg is in Gavill, 1743 (Aberdeen CR.), and Angus Derg was a Moray Jacobite of the '45. The surname is said to be a common one in Glenlivet. Explained as from Gaelic dearg, but with exception of the last entry, this seems unlikely. It is an English surname.
