With a few exceptions, e.g. Dr. John Darley (1799-1884) Protestant Bishop of Kil nore, who was born in Co. Monaghan, the Darleys, since they came to Ireland in the seventeenth century, have been continuously associated with Dublin and adjacent counties.
The best known family of the name was that which produced six prominent Dublin builders and architects in the second half of the eighteenth century; George Darley (1795-1846), the poet, was born in Dublin and Sir Frederick Matthew Darley (1830-1910) Australian statesman, in Co. Wicklow. The earliest reference to the name I have met is to Bryan Darley who is mentioned in Crom vellian Settlement papers as a surveyor in 1652and a few years later Petty's “census” includes Daniel Darley as a “titulado”
in Cork; but there appears to have been little further connexion with that city.
The name is taken from Darley, a place on the borders of Derbyshire and Yorkshire but is not noteworthy in England: the only Darleys included in the Dictionary of National Biography are Irish.
(English) belonging to Darley, 13th cent. Derleye, &c. = the Deer-Lea [Middle English de(e)r, Old English deór, a wild animal, deer + Middle English ley(e, Old English leáh, a lea]
Though this name is an English toponymic it is better known in Ireland than in England. It has been associated with Dublin and adjacent counties since the seventeenth century. SIF 51
