Dyrling or dedrling was the Old English term used to denote the young noble of a house, perhaps exclusively the eldest son, on whom all expectation rested. Afterwards it became a family name. Cild (child) was similarly used (compare Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, a. 1016, 1066). Derlig de Arfdift was a witness a. 1177 (CMN., 7), and Waldevus Darling or Derlyng was a charter witness in Roxburgh c. 1338 (Dryburgh, 313; BNCH., XXIV, p. 226). Sir John Derlynge was precentor of Caithness in 1368 (OPS., II, p. 617), John Derling and Andrew Derling were burgesses of Edinburgh in 1381 (Egidii, p. 22), and Stevyne Darling, John Darlyng, and Rynjyn (= Ninian) Darling witnessed resignation of a feu in Peebles in 1471 (Scots lore, p. 52). Dem Elen (Dame Elena) Darling or Derlyng, a religious of North Berwick, is in record in 1544 and 1548 (CMN., 60, 65). Mr. Robert Darline was minister at Ews in 1733 (Dumfries), and William Darling in Grainyfoord of Grange of Balmaghie is in record in 1752 (Kirkcudbright). A family of this name were kindly tenants for many generations under the monks of Melrose, and latterly as tacksmen and feuars. Darleing 1671. Thirteen of the name are recorded in Lauder Commissariot Record.
