Das Neves Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

Onomastic family name derived from the Portuguese language.

"Neves" could be translated as a plural of the English word snow (the precipitation of water ice particles) and mostly is associated to religious origin (catholic church). However, just like the English word, it is rarely used as a plural noun and only in literary/poetic context.

It can be related to "Nossa Senhora das Neves" (Our Lady of the Snows), a religious figure that carries an ancient tradition (per wikipedia): a roman couple, that prayed to the Virgin Mary light on what to make of their fortune, received while dreaming a message that the Holy Mary would like that a temple should be erected in her honor. This temple would be located precisely where on the Esquiline Hill (Esquilino), one of Rome's hills, snow would fall.

That is said to have happened from the 4th to 5th August in mid-Summer. In the morning, the land where today is located the Santa Maria Maggiore basilica (Holy Mary Major) appeared covered with snow.
