Dassori Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

Sori is a coastal town 14 km east of Genoa, which has Italy's highest concentration of the name. The name is an alternative form of "da Sori" and reflects a common phonetic occurrence in Italian, e.g. "davvero" for "da vero" ("really") and "dappertutto" for "da per tutto" ("everywhere"). Leonardo could have used "Davvinci" instead of "da Vinci". (One might expect also to find persons named "da Sori", but apparently the only one in the world lives in Burkina Faso and is presumably unrelated.).An alternative theory derives the name from the Spanish city of Soria, an important and heavily Jewish city until the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. Many Spanish Jews in fact fled to Genoa, where they were accepted but in many cases forced to deny their faith and conceal their Spanish origin. As the theory goes, the conveniently near town of Sori provided a camouflage native Italian name that could still be identified by their fellow refugees. While I know of no documented evidence to support this theory, it has plausibility and doesn't necessarily conflict with the derivation expounded in the preceding paragraph.
