From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Woulfe treats Davock as obsolete, giving Doake, Doag and Doig as the modern forms of MacDabhóe. In that he is wrong: these names, as Reaney states, are abbreviated forms of Gille Dog, i.e. follower of St. Cadoc, and are quite distinct from Davock; I may add that in Ireland they are not found in Co.
Galway, but are not uncommon in east Ulster. Woulfe mentions, correctly, MacDavock as an earlier form. Mr. P. J. Kennedy tells me that, though it is very scarce, there are families of Davock in the Athenry district today, and birth registrations show that it was in east Galway in small numbers during the past century. It is of the same origin as Mac Cavock and MacCooke (see More Irish Families, p. 281) i.e. a branch of the Burkes of Connacht. Another variant, MacCavock, is found in Mayo, in which county the place name Ballydavock, indicates the presence of the family in the Castlebar district.
Arthur Gerald Davock (d. 1675) of Athenry was a distinguished missionary priest. Two other seventeenth century priests of the name, Fathers John and James Davock, were also from Co. Galway.
