This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Theobald,' from the nick. Tibbie, which became also Tipple, which see. A lazy pronunciation changed these to Dibble and Dipple. Interchanges between D and T were very common. For several instances v. Tennyson (originally Dennyson). There can be no doubt about this derivation. So early as the Hundred Rolls we find:

An unmistakeable variant of Tibald. the popular form of Theobald. Miss Yonge has the order thus: Theobald, Tybalt, Tibbie, Dibble (History Christian Names). The Netherlands form is Dippolt.
