DE CLARE: "The whole of the southern district eventually fell under the feudal control of the great De Clare or Clarence family, who have given their name to an English town, an Irish county, a royal dukedom, and a Cambridge college." Dr. Donaldson, in Cambridge Essays, 1856, page 60. The name was first assumed from the barony of Clare, co. Suffolk, by Richard Fitz-Gilbert, a companion of the Conqueror, son of Gilbert Crispin, Earl of Brione in Normandy, who was son of Geoffrey, a natural son of Richard I., duke of Normandy.
