de Gaudio Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

This surname derives from a medieval gratifying name Gaudius (full of graces and goodness).

Traces of these cognominizations can be found since 1200 in an act in which we read that the noble Neapolitan Patrizio Bartolomeo Caracciolo Pisquizi joined in marriage with Teodora Capece Del Gaudio. In the same century Giacomo Del Gaudio became lord of Carinola.

The surname Del Gaudio is typical of the Neapolitan, Avellino and Salerno and has secondary strains also in the Potentino, Foggia and Caserta.

Di Gaudio would seem Sicilian with a log in Palermo.

De Gaudio, absolutely rare, has a stock in Cosenza and is almost certainly due to a transcription error.
