de La Houssaye Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

The De la Houssaye (Delahoussaye) clan of Louisiana claims descent from French aristocracy. In France the patronym originally appears to have been Pelletier or Le Pelletier, de la Houssaye being a titular appelation.* In Louisiana, although several family members retained Pelletier as a surname, today most have assumed De la Houssaye as the accepted patronym.

The progenitor of most Louisianians of that name was Paul-Augustin le Pelletier de la Houssaye, who came to New Orleans as a French army officer probably in the 1740s.

There he married Madeleine-Victoire Petit de Livillier of a rich and politically powerful family in the city.

After serving for a time as commandant of Arkansas Post (1752), he returned to New Orleans to become town major (1763) and was later awarded the military honor of Chevalier de St. Louis.

Soon thereafter he moved with his family to Poste des Attakapas (St. Martinville), where in 1769 he was appointed commandant of the provincial militia.

During the late eighteenth century and much of the nineteenth, Paul-Augustin and his descendants formed one of the most influential families of the Teche area.

He and his sons, Louis and Alexandre-Étienne (both of whom married into the Pellerin family with noble roots France), acquired large land holdings along Bayou Teche and modest cattle herds in the adjacent prairies between the Teche and Vermilion River. In 1771 the father obtained a grant of some 1,200 acres on the Teche at Fausse Pointe, near present New Iberia, where he established the first family estate.

Three years later he possessed 40 cattle, 6 horses, and 20 sheep and was cultivating a portion of his land with 24 slaves.

Through grants and purchases, by 1800 the two sons had acquired title to more than 11,000 acres of land along the Teche south of St. Martinville.

Subsequent years saw a gradual decrease in the number and size of the De la Houssaye properties in the Teche area, although many of the families ran cattle in the adjacent prairies until the Civil War.

Only two members of the clan became substantial antebellum planters along the Teche; François-Chevalier De la Houssaye, son of Louis, grew cotton on his estate in St. Mary Parish, and Barthélemy-Octave, son of Alexandre-Étienne, cultivated sugarcane on his Hillside Plantation near present Jeanerette.

Barthélemy-Octave's brother, Alexandre le Pelletier, established the only steamboat line between St. Martinville and New Orleans in operation from the 1820s until the Civil War.

His elder son, Louis-Alexandre le Pelletier, whose wife was Sidonie Perret of Louisiana literary fame, in 1841 moved from St. Martinville to Franklin on the lower Teche, the southernmost point of De la Houssaye residence in the state.

Until ca 1870 almost all of the De la Houssayes lived in the Teche area between St. Martinville and Franklin.

One family, however, headed by Gustave and Eugenie Richard (its connection with the main De la Houssaye line is uncertain) in the 1840s settled in the Grand Coteau area near the Teche in St. Landry Parish.

After 1870 several families began to migrate westward toward Abbeville and later to Crowley and Lake Charles.

In the present century many moved to New Orleans and some to southeastern Texas. But still today over half of the De la Houssaye households in Louisiana remain in the Teche area, and property at Fausse Pointe, the initial place of settlement of the clan's progenitor more than 200 years ago, is still in the hands of some of his descendants
