In Spain, a vega is a 'fertile plain or lowland' or 'water meadow' with most of its bearers belonging to the nobility from the Castile region (originally anyway).

When traveling west through the north American desert, settlers came across an oasis and named the area, Las Vegas, meaning the meadows.
