(German), of Mérode. (variant: van Berkenrode.) The Counts of Mérode derive their name from Rode, i. e., Assart, or Mérode, in the Duchy of Juliers. One of this family was a General in the Catholic army during the Thirty Years' War; and from him was derived the word marauder. His troops were noted, even in that day, for their plundering propensities, and were called, from their leader, “Mérodeurs.” There is a Dutch expression, “op merode gaan,” to go a-marauding.
