The family derive from Geoffrey of Montmorenci, a younger son of Herve de Montmorenci, grand butler of France, whose elder son was ancestor of the great Dukes de Montmorency, of Luxembourg, of Beaumont, and Laval. Geoffrey's descendants had large possessions in England and Ireland, in which latter country they eventually settled. In the XV. century they assumed the name of Morres, but the ancient and distinguished patronymic was resumed by the third Viscount Montmorency, who succeeded to the title in 1756.
