= Dearing, q.v.
A branch of the very old Kent family of Dering settled in Leix in the sixteenth century and soon acquired much property in adjoining counties. They held many important official positions but the name never became numerous. SIF 52
O'Hart's statement that the Irish Deerings are an ancient Munster family called in Irish (5 Dirighe is quite untenable. It is possible that some families of Ó Dirin may have anglicized their name Deering, though I have found no evidence of that. There is no doubt that Ó Dirin is normally Dirreen: Woulfe considers this rare name (so rare indeed is it that it is not to be found in the birth registrations for the three years 1864 to 1866) to be a variant of Dirrane (Ó Diréain) which is quite numerous in and around the city of Galway and rarely found elsewhere.
Deering is the name of a very old Kent family (spelt Dering there). In Ireland they date back to 1577 and in 1585 Antony Deeringe, queen's pensioner, obtained grants of land in Counties Dublin and Kildare. In 1623 John Dearing or Dering “gent” lived at a place called Moat in Co. Kildare and in 1667 Thomas Deering was of Newtown in the same county as we know from their wills: and about the same time the family had considerable property in Co. Wexford as the Civil Survey attests. From that time references to the family are numerous in seventeenth and eighteenth century Leinster records. A Col.
Daniel Dearing served with the Danish forces in the Williamite war: none of the name is recorded as fighting on the Jacobite side. No less than eleven of the name appear as state officials between 1667 and 1732, holding such posts as auditor-general and clerk of the Privy Council. Later they acquired property outside Leinster: the Charles Deering, who was M.P. for Monaghan in 1695 and 1699, was of Dublin; but one branch settled in Co. Fermanagh and another at Dunmore, Co. Galway, where their estate‘ extended to 11,206 acres in 1876. Griffith's Valuation of the l850's records 16 families of Deering in King's Co. (Offaly), 9 in Co. Carlow and 8 in Co. Kildare.
(English) Descendant of Deoring (beloved).
(English), Son of Deor; i.e., Dear, Beloved. Deor, a man's name, signified also deer or other wild animals.
