From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
From the old barony of Denholm, in the parish of Cavers, Roxburghshire. The name may also be from Denholm, a parish in Dumfriesshire, in which county there were landowners of the name in the fifteenth century (Stodurt), but the first is the more likely source of the name. Guy de Denum of Roxburghshire rendered homage, 1296, and as Guy de Denhom served as juror on inquests at Roxburgh and Dumfries in 1303—4 (Bain, II, p. 199,376, 412). Alan de Denvme purchased the lands of Le Hyllis together with a piece of ground lying on the Maydebane (now Medwyn), 1299 (REG., 253). John of Denum and William of Denum appear in record between 1333—57 (Rot. Scot., I, p. 223,245, etc.). Rowe Dennum was witness in Lanark, 1488 (Lanark, p. 4), Symon Dennum was retoured heir in lands in barony of Camwath, 1506 (Retours, Lanark, 462), and Margaret Dennym appears in Neder Mosplat, 1533 (Rental). John Dennholm or Dennhome was ordained commissarie for the army in 1650 (Irvtne, I, p. 104,106). William Denholme, portioner of Ersilton, 1662 (RRM., II, p. 29), James Denholme, fermorar in Mersemilne, 1680 (Inquis., 6224), and James Denholm (1772—1818) wrote a history of Glasgow. A pension paid to Margeret Denham in Edinburgh, 1741 (Guildry, p. 177). The surname is said to be now unknown in the neighborhood of its origin.
