From the lands of Denovan in the parish of Dunipace, Stirlingshire. Six individuals of this name appear in the Commissariot Record of Dunblane from 1598 onwards. J. C. Denovan was author of Ocean rhymes, printed privately in Edinburgh in 1824. The Finlaus de Donnouen in Bothwell from whom a horse was purchased in 1312 (Bain, III, p. 421) may have derived his name from the same place. The local pronunciation of the name is Dunniven.
