From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Sir James Macgregor, dean of Lismore or Argyll, a Pope's knight of the end of the fifteenth and beginning of the sixteenth centuries and well-known as the compiler of the collection of Gaelic verse known as the Dean of Lismore's Book, left descendants in Perthshire, who are traced under the patronymic of Macindene or Deneson for some generations after his time (Arnchaeologia Scotica, III, p. 317). He was, however, not the only dean who gave origin to the name. Neil MeYndone or McYndayn was tenant of Ballegrogane, Kintyre, in 1505 (ER., XI, p. 698), and John McYndayn McCollef and Macan or Macum (i.e. Malcolm) Mc yndayn appear in record in 1519 (Cawdor, p. 131). Martin M'Indayn or M'Indene appears as a witness at Isle of Lochtay in 1552 (BBT., p. 195,196), and Gregour Denesoun in Stwix, ane peciabill trew man," was "cruellie murthurit de certane rebellis" in 1565 (Coll., p. 33). Donald M'Coule Vclndeane and Dougall Denesoun M'Gregor, 1589, were son and grandson of the dean of Lismore. The name survives as Denson and perhaps as Dennison, though this latter name is more likely to be a shortening of Dennistoun.
